It is used in most water-based muds to increase and maintain pH and alkalinity. It is a dangerous material to handle because it is very caustic and gives off heat when dissolved in water. It is used in synthesis, in the treatment of cellulose to make rayon and cellophane, in the production of plastics, soaps and cleaning products, among other uses.
