In the oil and gas industry, methanol is used primarily for drying and de-icing. Methanol is injected both intermittently and continuously. It prevents the formation of hydrates, mainly in offshore reservoirs, and reduces the freezing point of water contents during the transport of oil and gas. It is an industrial solvent and is used as a raw material in the manufacture of Formaldehyde. Methanol is also used as antifreeze in vehicles, fuel for camping-gas pumps, solvent for inks, dyes, resins, adhesives and Aspartame. Methanol can also be added to Ethanol to make it unfit for human consumption.
