In many occasions it is used as an oxygenating agent for gasoline. It is used industrially to obtain acetaldehyde, vinegar, butadiene, ethyl chloride and nitrocellulose, among others. It is widely used as a solvent in the synthesis of drugs, plastics, lacquers, perfumes, cosmetics. It is also used in antifreeze mixtures, as a fuel, as an antiseptic in surgery, as a raw material in synthesis, and in the preservation of physiological and pathological specimens.
